Abstract
The development of nanocomposite systems that enable efficient solar energy conversion has been substantial and continuing interest in nanomaterial research. A number of successful utilization of nanocomposites has been demonstrated in water-splitting and solar cell applications. In this talk, the development of novel heterostructured nanocomposites will be presented. The first part of the talk includes the synthesis of TiO2–SrTiO3 nanotubes and their utilization in photoelectrochemical water-splitting. This new nano-heterojunctions facilitate charge carrier separation and suppress charge recombination, thus significantly improving photocatalytic activity. TiO2–SrTiO3 nanotube arrays were further utilized as a novel oxide substrate for CdS quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs). SrTiO3 on TiO2 surface passivates surface states of TiO2 and builds cascade-structured band alignment, which significantly reduces charge recombination at electrode surface. Thus, CdS/TiO2–SrTiO3 electrode exhibits a superior photoelectrochemical performance than CdS/TiO2 electrode with ~70% increase in external quantum efficiency. In the second part of the talk, the development of nanostructured quantum dots (QDs) and fullerene composite will be presented. This research provides more insight into CdSe QD–C60 hybrid nanocomposite in terms of electron transfer kinetics and photoelectrochemical performance. Spectroscopic analysis combined with photoelectrochemical study reveal that the size dependency of both properties appears in an opposite trend, which is attributed to the unique physical properties of CdSe QDs.
